A Personal Invite to Our Event + The Greatest Trick We Ever Played on Ourselves

Hi,

This week, we are chugging along setting up our new fund, and finding the right partners. On Sunday, I’m going to New York for a few days for the Opal’s Family Office Winter Forum and Opal Investing in Healthcare 2025 conference so I’m very excited about that!

I wanted to personally invite you to a few of our events this week and next:

If we’re not already connected, I’d love to hear from you—please follow me on LinkedIn and Instagram. Let’s connect!

But before I share more about our events, I want to take a moment to express how i’m feeling this week…

The Greatest Trick We Ever Played on Ourselves

The greatest trick we ever played on ourselves was believing that having it all meant having a family and a career.

I got both.
Newsflash: It wasn’t enough.

No one tells you that even after you check every box — the career, the partner, the kids — you can still feel like something’s missing. Not because you’re ungrateful, but because somewhere along the way, we were taught to settle.

We were told that if you have the picture-perfect job, the picture-perfect relationship, the picture-perfect home, we should be happy.

That wanting more — more respect, more joy, more purpose — was selfish.
That good enough was the best we could hope for.

But no one talks about what happens when you get all those things — and still feel invisible in your own life.

No one talks about the quiet moments, when you realize you’ve spent so much time keeping everything together, you forgot to ask yourself if you’re okay.

My divorce taught me something I never expected — the hardest part wasn’t leaving.

The hardest part was all the years I spent staying.
Staying because this is what society expected of me.
Staying because I was afraid of what people would say if I left.
Staying because I didn’t want to be selfish — especially for my kids.
Staying because I convinced myself that my own happiness didn’t matter.

But here’s the truth:
Wanting more doesn’t make you ungrateful.
It doesn’t mean you failed.
It doesn’t make you selfish.

It makes you real.

The hardest thing isn’t walking away — it’s admitting to yourself that you need more, even if no one else understands why.

Because it’s not about having it all.
It’s about having the courage to want more — and believing you deserve it.

With Love,

Mariane Bekker
