This Week's Journal
I Just want chocolate
On Tuesday, I was hosting an event.
By the time I picked up my kids, it was already 7:30 PM. I was exhausted, and the mom guilt was creeping in.
"Liam, baby, I'm so sorry I couldn't pick you up earlier. I missed you so much."
I tried to explain.
"Mommy is working really hard. I know I'm not always around as much as I'd like to be, but one day, I'm going to buy us a big, beautiful house. I'm doing all of this for you."
He looked at me and said:
"Mommy, all I want is chocolate."
I laughed. And then it hit me.
Here I was, chasing this future I had imagined for us. A bigger house. More financial security. A better life.
Convincing myself that every late night and every extra hour of work was a sacrifice I was making for my children.
But my son wasn't asking for any of those things.
He just wanted chocolate.
And probably a little more time with his mom.
It made me realize how often we exhaust ourselves trying to give the people we love everything, without realizing that what they want most is something we already have.
Our time. Our attention. Our presence.
Maybe the beautiful life we're working so hard to give them isn't something we need to build someday.
Maybe it's the life we're missing right now.
