This Week's Journal
The Hardest Part Isn't Leaving. It's Coming Back.
Yesterday, I left the hospital for a few hours to host one of my Founders Bay events.
For a little while, I was back in my other world.
Talking to founders.
Meeting investors.
Laughing.
Thinking about AI, startups, and the future.
Then I drove back to the hospital.
Walking through those doors again felt... heavy.
Not because I didn't want to be there.
Because my brain had just switched worlds.
One moment I was surrounded by energy and ambition.
The next, I was back to physical therapy sessions, medication schedules, and quiet hospital hallways.
It made me realize something.
Our brains don't transition as easily as we think they do.
Every environment creates its own rhythm, priorities, and emotions. When we move from one world to another, our brains have to rebuild that mental map. That takes energy.
Maybe that's why coming back from vacation feels strange.
Why the first day at a new job is exhausting.
Why returning to work after becoming a parent can feel overwhelming.
It's not just a change in schedule.
It's a change in context.
As I walked back into Liam's room, I realized something else.
One day we'll leave this hospital for good.
And that transition will probably feel strange too.
Not because we'll miss being in a hospital.
But because this chapter has changed us.
We spend so much time trying to get through transitions that we forget they're also transforming us.
Every new world we enter leaves us a little different than the person who walked in.
