The Space Between
There’s a Japanese expression, “ma” (間).
It roughly translates to the meaningful space between things.
In music, it’s the silence between the notes that gives the melody its beauty.
Without the pauses, everything becomes noise.
Lately, I’ve been thinking about how much that applies to life.
When I was married, there wasn’t much space.
There wasn’t enough room to discover who I was outside of being a wife, a mom, or someone constantly taking care of the next thing.
I didn’t really know what I loved.
I didn’t know what hobbies made me feel alive.
I didn’t know what kind of career I truly wanted to build.
I was always moving from one responsibility to the next.
Then life forced space upon me.
At first, I hated it.
Coming home to an empty house after the kids left felt unbearably isolating.
There was no one to tell about my day.
No constant conversation.
No distraction.
Just… space.
But over the past few years, something unexpected happened.
That empty space slowly became possibility.
It became the foundation for building Founders Bay, meeting incredible founders and investors, and rediscovering how much I love bringing people together.
It became travel, dancing, Burning Man, and a return to curiosity.
It became the simple but profound question:
Who am I when nobody else is deciding my schedule?
Maybe that's what space gives us.
Not more time.
The chance to finally hear ourselves—and remember who we are.
