The Places That Remember Us

Last week, I hosted my first YouCode Forum in San Francisco.

It was everything I had worked toward—
a room full of builders, engineers, conversations about the future.

It was at the Databricks office, right downtown.

And right before walking in…
I had an anxiety attack.

Not because of the event.
Not because I was nervous about speaking.

But because of the building.

I stood there holding my You.com poster, about to walk in — and then it hit me.

This wasn’t just any building.

This was where I used to work.
At Hearst Lab.

My first job after college.

And suddenly…
I wasn’t in the present anymore.

I was back in a different life.

A life where I was married.
Where things felt simple.
Where we were young and full of hope.

I remembered how we used to go to lunch together every week.
How he would wait for me so we could go home together.
How I would come into work already missing him—
and leave the office excited to see him again.

Back then, everything felt certain.

And standing there, years later,
holding a poster for a life I built without him…

it felt like two versions of me collided in the same doorway.

One who believed in forever.
And one who had to learn how to rebuild after it ended.

It’s strange how places hold memories.

Not just of what happened —
but of who we were when it happened.

A building becomes more than a building.
It becomes a time capsule.

Of love.
Of dreams.
Of versions of ourselves we don’t live as anymore.

And for a moment…
I didn’t know which version of me I was supposed to be.

The girl walking into her first job,
or the woman walking into a room she created.

But then something hit me.

Both versions are me!

The one who loved deeply.
And the one who survived losing it.
The one who believed in forever.
And the one who learned how to start again.

Maybe that’s why places feel so heavy sometimes.

Not because we haven’t moved on —
but because they remind us how much we’ve lived.

I took a breath.
Wiped my tears.

And walked in.

Not as the person I used to be —
but as someone who can do it with a broken heart.
